Photos of the 43rd Annual Smith River Canoe Race

The Wolfeboro Lions have been putting on the race for 43 years. People still enjoy it whether in the boats or on land. There are often spills but people of all ages enjoy the race. The weather was great, bugs not present and the water was flowing down the rapids.

The race starts at Albee Beach, goes down the Smith River to Crescent Lake, to the dam and then carry into a short section of white water. Then, they go under the bridge to the next dam, portage into Back Bay and finish at the town docks. The excitement, of course, is in the river with the whitewater……

As people approach the dam, they are all paddling hard.

But then there is the carry around the dam to the white water section. The release of water from the dam causes some people difficulty while others make it seem easy.

At the same time, others seem to have trouble……

But he still has his hat on…….. Another canoe had some difficulty……

Long time Lake Wentworth people, the Denbys, made a nice transition to the whitewater while the kayak behind them had a bit more difficulty. Incidentally, Dave seems to always wear this hat in the race.

Once started down the river from the dam, it is generally clear sailing as the rapids are quite forgiving.

But as the paddlers have fun, so do the people on shore….

It is always a great event. Come and watch next year or dip your paddle in the water and have fun doing the race.
