It looks as though the Great Smith River Canoe Race will have to do without the great Smith River this year.
Because
of the extremely high water on the lakes and the resulting excessive
runoff in the Smith River, Roger Murray of the sponsoring Wolfeboro Lions Club says that the race, to be held this Saturday, May 20, will be held
this year as a flat-water event on Lake Wentworth.
According to Murray, the race will begin and end at the Allen Albee town beach, but the exact course on the lake will be determined by wind conditions at the time of the event.
Racers are divided into classes, with the first class setting out at 1:15 p.m.
Access to the Allen Albee Beach is down Moose Point Road, off Route 28.
Because of increasing parking pressure at the Allen Albee Beach, no
cars without canoes will be allowed down Moose Point Road to the beach
after noon on the day of the race. The road will be completely closed
to non-emergency vehicles from 12:45 p.m. onward. The sponsoring Lions Club will have its Cook Shack serving food and drinks at Albee Beach.
Participants in last year’s race should already have received a
registration form in the mail. You can download and print a copy of the
form from this page. Note that you’ll need the freely obtainable Adobe
Acrobat Reader in order to view and print the form.
This year's registration form can be downloaded here. Registration forms are also available at sporting goods stores in
Wolfeboro, the Wolfeboro Town Hall, and at the Wolfeboro Chamber of
Commerce.
