On August 8, 2009, the West Beach at Point Breeze was crowded with sailboats. After a skipper's meeting, boats set sail and the race began.
Consistent
6-10 mile per hour breezes, bright sun and mid-seventies temperatures were the
formula for a perfect racing day for sailboats on Lake Wentworth. 31 boats raced in 3
races. There were 31 skippers and 26
crew members. Of special note, the race
attracted 9 first time skippers who were testing their newly acquired boat
handling skills while navigating the race course. Family members and friends of the sailors
gathered at Point Breeze’s West Beach to observe the friendly competition,
enjoy refreshments and meet one another. (Pictures are shown at the end.)
First
place winners in the long course race included:Dan Weidner in the catamaran class; John Emans in the windsurfing class;
Richard Lamparti in the sloop class; Taylor Falogoust in the Zuma class (all
from Camp Birchmont); David Bindman in the Sunfish class; Keith Simpson in the
Laser class. Keith was also the first skipper across the finish line.
Two
additional short course races were held for the Boat Museum Community Sailing
Group program participants which included both Sunfish and Optimist
classes.Travis Lush won both races in
the Sunfish class while Jack Mead and John Henry Paluszek split the winning of
the Optimist class races.These young
sailors demonstrated excellent sailing skills which they had developed under
the coaching of the Community Sailing Group’s trainer, Marina Garland.
The
Point Breeze Race Committee, headed up by Russ Schundler included:Starters (Linda Murray, Eloise Schundler);
Timer (Ralph Smith); Registration Team (Joan Klimm, Rosemary Clancy, Libby
Schundler, Debbie Murray); Picket Boat Captains (Felicity Freund, Bill Ripp,
