driving on Lake wentworth - 1/18/2010 11:46 AM I noticed an interesting article in the Grunter that listed
"The Ice Strength Table" which is the permissible load bearing weight per thickness of ice according to the American Pulpwood Association. Seven and a half inches of ice should support a passenger car- 8 inches a light truck (2 1/2 ton gross)- 10 inches a medium truck (3 1/2 ton gross)- 12 inches a heavy truck (7 to 8 ton gross) all the way up to 36 inches of ice that will support 110 tons. The trick is knowing the ice thickness uniformity and I think if your vehicle goes through the law says you have to get it out within 24 hours. Pretty costly I'm sure. It's rumored that a snowmobile went through between Poplar Island and the Sister Ledges a few years ago and the owners just walked away because of that cost.

driving on Lake wentworth - 1/18/2010 12:02 PM One thing I neglected to mention in the previous post was that this table does not apply to "parked loads" and there are many variables concerning the integrity of the measured ice.

driving on Lake wentworth - 2/13/2010 8:06 AM Hi, I was just wondering if there is any activity still happening on the late? Ice fishing? Driving? Does anyone have pictures from this year that they could upload?

Thanks,

Jim

driving on Lake wentworth - 2/16/2010 1:55 PM Since the end of the Winni Fishing Derby a couple of weeks ago, traffic across the lake has been light. There have been a few ice boats enjoying an unexpected spell of good conditions, an occasional ATV or snowmobile, and, on Saturday, a huge group of people walking -- reportedly students attending Saturday classes in the local schools and being taken on an ice fishing field trip.

All of that will likely change with today's snow.

driving on Lake wentworth - 2/16/2010 6:58 PM I should have taken a picture but there was open water between stamp act and kate island last week. In some parts, 2 large ice sheats had been pressed together and pushed up into a "tent-like" structure or tunnel that must have been 40 feet long with slush and water under it. Beyond this was a 3-4 foot wide area of open water.

Curious if people have seen similar in other areas of the lake?

driving on Lake wentworth - 2/17/2010 7:40 AM WE were at Hodge Shore on Sunday and saw a man and his son skating out near Stampback Island. We were wondering if there could be some spots of thin ice. We had a good time at our cottage and had hot dogs grilled on the grill outside. We ate inside on the front porch. I guess the skaters did have a good time.

driving on Lake wentworth - 2/17/2010 8:14 AM I envy you grilling hotdogs and sitting by the Lake. We're enjoying a winter wonderland here in Boston this morning. Hallmark should come and make a Christmas card, the snow laden trees, glimmering in the sun are spectacular!

driving on Lake wentworth - 2/17/2010 11:31 AM I think my son and I were the ones seen skating out towards Stamp Act. There was some open water between Loon and Stamp Act. We had hoped to skate around Stamp Act but the ice was so rough we stayed around the Seven Sisters. We chipped a hole through the ice with a tool we had and also measured the thickness with our hockey sticks in abandoned ice fishing holes. The hole we made measured about 15 inches of ice and some of the ice fishing holes revealed 18 inches. March is often the heaviest snow month so there is still probably plenty of winter left.
