Ice Out Contest – Gone Sunday Apr. 14 at 3:15

Ice has been declared “OUT” as of 3:15 on April 14th.  This makes Debbie Bayne the winner as she is the closest to the time.  There are pictures of Saturday and Sunday of the area with the last ice……

The change between the 11th and 12th was dramatic. Now, the lake was mostly covered on the 11th on the Eastern half but then it moved west with an east wind overnight and then basically disappeared but it was not “ice free” as defined in the ice out rules. Still couldn’t get a boat to quite long stretches of Heath Shore. Still there Saturday afternoon so ice out had to wait until Sunday. The photo below was taken Saturday Afternoon.ice 1

Today at 3:15. Small chunks that you could move out of the way to get onto the lake.

The committee made of of Peter and Susan Goodwin and Shaun Berry has been watching the lake for the ice-out but we were also aided by Joe Irwin who was scouting the area on a frequent basis in the last hours of the contest.

On Saturday, there was ice in all the east facing bays on Stamp Act, filling the third one because the east wind blew ice into them. Much more there than on the “shores” but they don’t count because no one is supposed to go on the island anyway. Still ice on the north beach so no one was swimming. On the 11th,t here was a big area of open water between Cate Island and Mink Island but this area didn’t extend down to Brummet. East of Brummet, there was an area of open water for about 300 yards but there wasn’t much open water toward Warren Sands. There was open water along the east shore of Stamp Act up to the Bass Islands and east of them but there was mostly ice east of Bass to Point of Pines. Overnight, there was an East wind and this broke up the ice and now virtually all is free. This may have been the most sudden ice out. The Wednesday before it went out, there were places with a foot or so of ice. The wind probably caused the quick change. It blew the ice to the west and then continued to blow more water toward the west shore. To replace the water that was moved, water from below where the ice was, that stays at about 40 degrees all winter was then brought to the surface. This 40 degree water could melt a lot of ice! Well, so much for ice out until next year……
